The Birches Resort was built in 1930 by a local logging contractor. He chose one of the best locations on Moosehead Lake, facing east, guaranteeing spectacular sunrises over Mount Kineo.
Today, the resort is family-owned and operated by the Willard family, who bought it in the 1960s. In the 1990s the Willards added an outfitting operation, Wilderness Expeditions, providing guests and visitors to the area with a variety of outdoor activities. White water rafting, fishing, canoeing and kayaking, cross country skiing, sledding and snowshoeing are offered within the resort’s 11,000 acres.
The Birches Resort has rustic charm. It maintains 15 1930’s-style wood-hewn cottages that dot the lake, a lodge with guest rooms and a pine paneled dining room with magnificent lake views, small cottages in the woods for family camping, and comfortable vacation homes available for rent. All are beautifully situated.
